Salamanca Market is Hobart’s Saturday ritual: more than 300 stalls spread along Salamanca Place beneath the old sandstone warehouses. It runs every Saturday from 8.30am to 3pm, but its real value is not speed-shopping. Arrive with time to browse, eat and talk to makers.

Start early, then wander

The current Discover Tasmania guide (opens in a new tab) confirms the market’s Saturday 8.30am–3pm hours. Earlier is generally the calmer way to browse; later in the morning brings more atmosphere. Check current weather and market advice before travelling, and do not build a day around a specific stall unless you have confirmed it directly.

Buy with the place in mind

The market began in 1972 and now brings together food, produce, fine art, pottery, books, buskers and maker stalls. The useful approach is to choose a few things to explore rather than trying to cover every marquee. Makers and growers are an important part of the experience, so conversation can be as valuable as the purchase.

Make Salamanca a wider walk

The market sits between the waterfront and historic warehouses that now hold galleries, shops, cafes and restaurants. When the market feels busy, step into the surrounding streets or take Kelly’s Steps towards Battery Point. That turns a shopping stop into a slower Hobart neighbourhood walk.

Plan a comfortable visit

Wear layers for waterfront weather, carry a reusable bag and leave space for food rather than treating the visit as a rushed errand. Salamanca Place is close to the CBD, so combine it with the waterfront, TMAG or Battery Point instead of trying to drive between short stops.
