Hobart is easiest to enjoy when you keep its geography in view: the River Derwent and waterfront form one edge, kunanyi / Mount Wellington supplies the backdrop, and the CBD, Salamanca and Battery Point can be linked on foot. A good first visit does not need to chase every attraction. Choose one waterfront-and-city day, then add a mountain, art or ferry experience if time allows.
Use the waterfront as your orientation
Discover Tasmania describes Hobart as framed by kunanyi / Mount Wellington and the River Derwent. Start around Constitution Dock and the waterfront to get your bearings, then move between the CBD, Salamanca and Battery Point at walking pace. The route is as valuable as the stops: fishing boats, wharves, sandstone and changing river light make a flexible walk more rewarding than a rigid checklist.
Give Salamanca and Battery Point time
Salamanca is a natural transition between the waterfront and Battery Point. On Saturdays, Salamanca Market runs from 8.30am to 3pm; on other days the warehouses, galleries, cafes and nearby streets still make this a useful cultural quarter. Battery Point is a short walk from the CBD via Salamanca Place and is best explored on foot, so leave room to drift through its narrower streets rather than trying to drive a sightseeing loop.
Choose one cultural anchor
Mona and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery offer different kinds of art-and-history day. Discover Tasmania notes that Mona is commonly reached by ferry from Brooke Street Pier, while TMAG sits at the historic waterfront with Antarctic, Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage and contemporary work. Check each institution’s current opening and ticket information before committing a timed visit.
Treat the mountain as weather-dependent
Kunanyi / Mount Wellington offers views, alpine conditions and walking opportunities, but it is not a casual add-on when weather is unstable. Check current road, weather and track conditions, take warm layers and give the mountain its own time window. If conditions do not suit, stay closer to the water and use the city’s museums, food and heritage streets instead.
Build an achievable first day
A balanced first day can run waterfront to Salamanca to Battery Point, with TMAG or another cultural stop in the middle. On a Saturday, begin with the market before crowds build. Save Mona or kunanyi for a separate half-day or full-day plan, depending on transport and conditions. Hobart works best when the itinerary leaves space for weather and the simple pleasure of walking.
